Danang International Airport — Environmental Design

2026 · Da Nang, Vietnam

Danang International Airport stands as one of Vietnam's most dynamic gateways, welcoming millions of domestic and international travelers each year. Chiic Digital was entrusted to lead a comprehensive reimagining of the airport's visual and navigational experience — spanning the wayfinding system, icon system, and POSM design across commercial touchpoints. Beyond aesthetics, the project set out to build a cohesive environmental design system that helps passengers move through the terminal with confidence, reduces time lost searching for direction, and elevates the overall experience to match the standards of a world-class international airport. The work also played a part in the airport achieving its prestigious SKYTRAX 5-STAR RATING — a recognition of world-class service excellence.

The Brief

ACV approached Chiic Digital with a challenge that went beyond graphic design — it was a design problem centered on human behavior and emotion within a large-scale public space. The requirements: • Develop a unified visual identity system applicable across every touchpoint in the terminal — signage, informational panels, icon system, and commercial materials alike. • Craft a design language that is universally legible — understood instantly regardless of a passenger's language or cultural background — while still carrying a distinct sense of Da Nang's identity. • Meet rigorous standards for legibility, contrast, and consistency, in line with the criteria assessed under the SKYTRAX rating system. • Ensure the system was scalable and flexible enough to apply across a wide range of formats, from large-scale outdoor signage down to smaller touchpoints like standees and retail POSM.

The Challenge

Designing for a public space at the scale of an international airport comes with a distinct set of constraints:

  • A diverse passenger base: Travelers from countless countries, ages, and backgrounds meant the system needed to "speak" to everyone — without relying on language.
  • A high-density environment: With multiple flows of people intersecting throughout the terminal, information can easily become noise. The challenge was reducing cognitive load while still delivering all the information passengers actually need.
  • Consistency at scale: The system had to be applied uniformly across hundreds of touchpoints — from large directional signage to small icons to commercial materials — all while preserving a single, coherent design language.
  • Balancing function and commerce: POSM elements needed enough visual presence to capture attention, without disrupting the clarity of the broader wayfinding system.
  • The weight of international standards: Every design decision had to be made with an awareness of the rigorous benchmarks set by the SKYTRAX 5-star evaluation.

The Execute

1. Airport Instruction / Signage Design

The signage system was built around three core principles: readability, hierarchy, and intuitive navigation. Carefully selected typography, strategic color coding, and structured layouts allow passengers to move confidently through complex spaces — from directional signage to detailed informational panels, all aligned within one consistent design language.

2. Icon System Design

A comprehensive icon system was developed on a consistent grid, stroke weight, and geometric structure. The goal was universal, instant recognition — while still preserving a visual identity distinctly tied to Da Nang. Each icon was optimized for clarity at varying scales and viewing distances, ensuring quick comprehension even in high-traffic environments.

3. POSM Design

The POSM system extends the airport's visual identity into commercial and retail spaces, balancing visibility with aesthetic consistency. By carrying forward the design principles established in the wayfinding system, POSM elements remain visually coherent with the broader environment while effectively supporting retail and service partners — creating a more premium, seamless experience for passengers throughout the terminal. The project was delivered by a cross-functional team — Director, Account Manager, Art Director, Key Designer, Designer, and Editor — working closely together to ensure consistency from concept through to real-world application.

Chiic Digital brought a genuinely different perspective to environmental design at the airport — not just visually striking, but purposefully solving for how passengers actually navigate the space. The attention to detail across the icon system and signage played a real role in our journey toward the SKYTRAX 5-star rating. This is a collaboration we're truly proud of.
